We’re firm believers that sharing ideas and inspiration is the key to innovative thinking so we were delighted when Menellia contacted us to do a guest post for Nothing But Velvet. Firstly let us introduce ourselves, we’re Stephie and Ella from Glassboxes, a UK-based fashion blog.  We post about everything from personal style to architecture and travel, so if you enjoy this post then make sure to check out our site

In the UK, we brace ourselves for the start of autumn. Although it is often sad to wave goodbye to those warm summer days it is also exciting to rediscover the old cover-ups that have been patiently sitting in our wardrobes for months. At Glassboxes we love a well designed basic so we’re bringing you four essential cover-ups to take you from summer to autumn. Reach for a shirt, leather jacket, light knit or bomber and embrace the slight chill by layering up your look.

The Light Knit

Stephie – Everybody loves a slouchy jumper and this Zara knit is no exception. It can be layered over a dress or paired with jeans for a casual daytime look. The high neckline, bat wing sleeves and cropped style details make it a little more interesting than your average jumper. It is warm enough to keep those autumn chills at bay but also folds up small enough to be carried around in a bag should the sun choose to grace us with its presence.

The Leather Jacket

Ella -When I see the words ‘leather jacket’ I automatically associate it with ‘black' and ‘biker-style’, and although I think it’s always going to be the number one key item in your wardrobe, it can be fun to change things up from time to time (and let’s face it, you probably already own a few black biker jackets!) A fun way to put a twist on this staple piece is to buy one in a different colour- blues, burgundies and whites can be just as versatile and thrown over any outfit to make it look put together. As always I’m enjoying a single colour palette and letting the shapes do the talking.

The Shirt

Stephie – Update your classic white shirt by looking for interesting textures and fabrics or by considering off-white options. I have opted for a cream silk shirt which is a great way of softening an otherwise structured piece. Cream is also a great shade for autumn and can be paired with warm colours such as browns, beiges, reds and oranges.

The Bomber

Ella -This lightweight bomber from Cos is the perfect jacket to effortlessly take you from daytime to evening; the contrast of the sporty cut with the silky fabric makes it wearable on almost any occasion. It’s also a great layering piece for the tricky transitional period between summer and autumn when you don’t yet need a coat but still want to cover your arms. With there being so much variety in bomber jacket prints and designs on the market, you’ll be sure to find one that fits your style.
